Fort Boyard



The children's favourite and the best known thanks to the TV show that has been broadcasting for over 30 years! Built off the coast of Oléron under Napoleon between 1801 and 1859, it was designed to protect the mouth of the Charente River and the Rochefort Royal Cordage from English ships.In 1871, she became a prison for a few years. In 1913, the fort was decommissioned and sold in the 1960s. It is only in the 90s that it will start its new television history and will know the success that we know today! 

Chassiron Lighthouse

Citadel of the Château d'Oléron



Former castle of the Dukes of Aquitaine, built in the 11th century and destroyed by the wars of religion, it gave its name to the city.
In 1630, by order of Richelieu, a citadel was built to avoid English occupation and to ensure the possession of the island to France. Vauban will reinforce it under Louis XIV. It will be bombarded during the war by the French aviation and its restoration will begin in 1988. The 3 km long rampart path goes around the city. It now houses exhibition halls and hosts cultural events.

Cotinière Port



This port is the 1st of Charente Maritime and the 7th at the national level. Situated in the west of the island, on the Atlantic coast, it is a site not to be missed for the colours of its boats and the quality of its fishing!

Louvois Fort



In 1690, the Marquis de Louvois, Minister of War under Louis XIV, ordered the construction of an oval-shaped fort. It faces the citadel of the Château d'Oléron and was used to cross cannon fire and to lock the southern access to the Rochefort harbour. When Louvois died, Vauban took over the project and only half of the oval was completed.Classified as a historical monument in 1929, it has been open to the public since 1972. Oyster Route



This route is a must for those who wish to discover an essential heritage on the island: oyster farming. In the bend of the marshes and the coloured huts, you can stop at the producers to discover the oyster parks and taste!

Saint Pierre d’Oléron



Capital of the island, Saint Pierre is the real "commercial" center of the island. It is also a place steeped in history and heritage. It is here that the writer Pierre Loti chose to live. You will be able to discover the Bonnemie castle, the Lantern of the Dead but also its 17th century church.

Gatseau beach



Large beach of Saint Trojan sheltered from the winds and exposed due south, it is accessible by road but is also served by the "P'tit train de Saint-Trojan" which ventures into a wild and charming site.
